IncineratorBosses behind controversial Telford incinerator plans today vowed to press ahead with the plant despite Telford & Wrekin Council pulling out of its future waste scheme.

The vow from Sita UK came after Telford & Wrekin Council bosses announced they had brought their plans for future waste disposal to an end.

Councillor Andrew Eade, council leader, said they had halted the bidding process for the tender to run the borough’s future waste management, so they could take more time to consider the options available.

Bosses behind controversial Telford incinerator plans today vowed to press ahead with the plant despite Telford & Wrekin Council pulling out of its future waste scheme.

He said they had “ceased procurement of new long-term waste disposal services for the borough” but plans and contracts already in place would not be affected.

The move has been approved by the council’s cabinet members.

Sita UK was one of the bidders involved in the procurement process and is also behind a current planning application to build a energy-from-waste plant at Granville tip with its partner Cyclerval UK.

They claim the incinerator would be a clean way of dealing with rubbish and providing electricity.

Council chiefs said today’s decision to end waste disposal plans came after a review of the business case for the long-term treatment and disposal of waste.

Alison Jones, Sita UK spokeswoman, said the planning application which was in the hands of Telford & Wrekin Council would still go ahead.

“This announcement is not connected to the energy-from-waste planning application,” she said.

Michael Barker, Telford & Wrekin Council head of planning, said: “A planning application for an energy from waste incineration plant at Granville is still being dealt with by the council.”

Why doesn’t Cllr Andrew Eade look at an electoral ward map showing Telford & Wrekin, Bridgnorth, SABC, South Shropshire, North Shropshire and Stafford and colour green the electoral wards which had zero infant deaths in the 5-year period 2003-2007 and colour red those wards where the rate was 8.0 per 1,000 live births and above?

Plenty of “red” wards downwind of

Why hasn’t Telford & Wrekin opted for plasma gasification of waste as I suggested at the Shropshire Waste Plan public inquiry in January 2004?

Just because Shropshire CC ignored my advice, it didn’t stop plasma gasification being adopted in Korea, US, Canada, Japan, France, Norway etc. etc. and a plant is due to be built at Hirwaun, near Aberdare, S Wales.

Why waste money and health with an expensive and unsafe systems like incineration?
