UFO sighting linked to shortest day
Wednesday 7th January 2009, 3:50PM GMT.
UFO experts in the county today said the strange lights over Shropshire during the festive period may well have been extra-terrestrial activity and not, as suggested, party lanterns.
Philip Hoyle, of the UFO Investigation and Research Unit in Shrewsbury, said although many people put the lights down to Chinese lanterns and aircraft, this time of year did see an increase in UFOs.
He said: “I have been inundated with sightings from across the country in the last two to three weeks, especially people seeing orange lights.
“People think it is lanterns, but lanterns do not move like the lights in the skies are recorded as moving.
“Globally it is usually a high incident time around December 21, we do not know why, but this is the shortest day.
“For some reason the Shropshire area has always been a very active area over the past 55 to 60 years.

“We know that from official documents.”
Mr Hoyle urged people to report strange and unusual incidents in the area to him, anonymously if they prefer.
“These lights are an unknown,” he said. “One lady in Chile spotted a group of lights and caught them on a video, these same group of lights were then seen by a woman from Montford Bridge.”

I think the term ‘UFO expert’ is probably a contradiction in terms…
The UFO Investigation and Research Unit??
Who set this up? – What staus does it have?
And if it can make wild statements that orange lights ‘may well have been extra-terrestrial’ based solely on the likelihood that they weren’t party lanterns, then it’s basis of evidence must be called into question.

Phil Hoyle UFO Expert ROFLMAO!
Has anyone actually looked at their website or seen where they operate from? I have!
I guess there must be someone at the Star who actually believes all this nonsense otherwise why does this keep getting raked up!
And the amount of UFO related ‘Have Your Say’??? posts that I have had censored on this website is ridiculous – perhaps they have been abducted too?

How an earth can anyone be an ‘expert’ on something that by definition is not known?
I guess you just make up something that sounds a good story.

What qualifications does a person require to be a UFO expert?
A UFO is something that is unknown. How can someone be an expert on something that nothing is known about?
They’re not experts, just a group of people who believe in something and spend their spare time gathering ‘evidence’ in an effort to support their theories.

One thing about UFO stories and the speed they travel at is the lack of any sonic boom.
I believed all this stuff when I was young – much more cynical about humans and the capacity of the military to lie now.
The chances of a comparable Earth like system out there is almost certain. Evolution and extinsion would means life would be similiar to ours. A different environment and age, then who knows. The tyrrany of distance is a solvable problem if you drop Einstein and get real about FTL travel. If alien visitors are watching us, the acoustic agent provocateurs better watch out!

Dear Peter,
You are correct. There are no cirtified UFO experts. But there are UFOlogist, Who study and research these things. Astronomer J. Hynek was one who started out as a skeptic working as chief scientist on Project Bluebook the USA Air Force decade long study of these object, and turned into a strong believer. There does seem to be activity all over the world but just because something is Unidentified I feel it is jumping to conclusion to think it has to be “alien”.
I read a great deal of books on the subject and most would agree with me on this.

I have been informed that the use of wormholes make intersteller travel a possibility.
Imagine if you have a sponge, using a wormhole would compress the sponge into a tight ball and make travelling long distances possible

She was standing on a pair of steps on the bridge with a sea Captain’s telescope to her eye.

On Christmas Day approx. 6pm we saw a moving object maybe about 2000 ft up over the village of Portlethen, Aberdeenshire. At first I thought it was a plane landing, which I thought odd as the airport closes on Christmas Day. Then we realised it was moving in a straight line from S.East to N.West in a very controlled manner. My partner thought it was a lantern but I was not so sure. As the kids were with us I chose not to comment. I have observed many aircraft in the past and have witnessed shooting stars, meteor showers and even sattelites in the sky. This was like nothing I have even seen before. It was not by any stretch of the imagination “spectaculer” but it was not explainable. Who know’s???

Just because you can’t see the wind, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!
Surely, we can’t be the only living creatures in the universe…what a waste of 8 uninhabited planets!

When will the Shropshire Star stop this endless nonsense regarding UFO sightings? Is there nothing else to report on? I’m sure there’s real news and real reporting to be done in the county. Try leaving the offices in Telford and visit some of the county’s towns and communities and find out what’s happening. I don’t think little green men from Venus is top of list of worries, stories, happenings, etc for the vast majority of Salopians.

How can you all not believe?
Now the Shropshire Star has managed to capture one on film, seeming to be “beaming up” something, (in this article), I for one retract all allegations of these guys being nutters and believe we should immediately set up a committee of civil servants, (on high wages and with final salary pensions), to investigate the possibility of importing some cheap goods and labour from our extra terrestrial friends. We need to get the alcohol and tobacco duty sorted out immediately before we are overrun with venusian moonshine and titan & io cigarettes!

For those of you who love putting your special comments to insult good people, I have two things to say to you: 1-I hope from the bottom of my heart that you do experience a good sighting some day like we have, AND GET THE BIGGEST SCARE OF YOUR LIFE LIKE WE DID. 2-If you don’t believe it, don’t read it!!!!
