OAP accused over death of cyclist, 10

Wednesday 7th January 2009, 11:55AM GMT.

A 68-year-old Shropshire man has been charged in connection with a crash which claimed the life of a 10-year-old cyclist.

The man, from the Shrewsbury area, is due to appear in court later this month after being charged following the death of Lee Thompson Walker in North Wales last summer.

North Wales Police today said the 68-year-old man, who has not been named, has been charged with failing to stop after the collision, failing to report the collision and using a vehicle with a defective tyre.

A spokesman added: “The man has been bailed to appear at Llandudno Magistrates Court on January 19.”

Lee had been cycling with two friends on the A470 in Llanrwst when he was badly injured in a collision. He suffered severe chest and head injuries and died in Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool, the following day.

Tributes were paid to the youngster following his death, with his parents describing him as “one hell of a character”.

Lee was also described as “football crazy” and was a pupil at Ysgol Bro Gwydir in Llanrwst. He was reported to have played as goalkeeper in the under 10s team with Llanrwst United.
