Ex-county MP’s daughter in ‘terror’ arrest
Tuesday 6th January 2009, 12:05PM GMT.
A former Shropshire MP today revealed his daughter had been stopped by police using anti-terror powers – for having a dirty number plate.
Ex-Tory MP Christopher Gill highlighted the incident and others of people being apprehended under the Terrorism Act to illustrate his concerns about the threat to individual liberty in Britain.
He said his daughter’s “offence” was to be caught driving along The Embankment in London with a dirty number plate.
“All of these people now have a police record. The photographic evidence of their supposed offences will remain in police files for seven years,” said Mr Gill in an article in Freedom Today, the journal of the Freedom Association.
“But the fact that they have been apprehended under one of the Terrorism Acts will remain on file for the rest of their lives, notwithstanding that none of them has ever been charged or summoned to appear in court.”
The former Ludlow MP protested: “The climate of fear created by the Government has allowed ministers to introduce a whole raft of repressive legislation that is now impacting on our lives in a most draconian and sinister way.”
He said the odds against being able to prevent the loss of the basic principles of British justice were lengthening, blaming EU legislators for using Westminster’s “useful idiots”.
