Woolworths closure put back

Monday 5th January 2009, 11:55AM GMT.

The final day of trading for the Woolworths chain has been put back 24 hours.

The firm’s remaining 200 outlets were due to shut today, including branches in Bridgnorth, Newtown and Ludlow, but this has been postponed until tomorrow, the company’s administrators said.

A spokesman for Deloitte said there was stock that needed to be sold off and the closure was proving to be a massive undertaking.

At least 150 of the retailer’s 807 outlets held their last day of trading on December 30, including Oswestry and Market Drayton, with everything, including the fixtures and fittings, on sale at discount prices.

Stores in Wellington, Newport, Telford Town Centre, Shrewsbury and Welshpool have also closed.

The firm’s collapse leaves 27,000 workers facing redundancy.
