Racing’s frozen at Ludlow

Shropshire horse racing enthusiasts were left kicking their heels today as Ludlow’s opening meeting of 2009 was postponed, writes James Garrison.
The south Shropshire track was due to stage a National Hunt card but was forced to abandon shortly before 8am yesterday as the cold snap takes its toll on the British racing scene.
“It went to minus eight on Saturday night and near one of the rails by the winning post it was minus 10,” said clerk of the course Bob Davies. “The decision was effectively a formality.”
Ludlow – whose next scheduled meeting is on Thursday, January 15 – wasn’t the only meeting to fall by the wayside today with Taunton abandoning.
And the all-weather card at Wolverhampton was called off after the Dunstall Park track was hit by up to an inch and a half of snow.
Clerk of the course Fergus Cameron said: “Conditions have improved but the track is still unraceable and there is an area in front of the stands which is not going to improve sufficiently.”
And the picture is no brighter for the coming days, with tomorrow’s meeting at Leicester already biting the dust and a string of other inspections planned.
