Ice and fog make roads treacherous

Saturday 3rd January 2009, 10:50AM GMT.

Drivers heading out across Shropshire faced a hazardous time today as dense fog compounded another big freeze overnight to make the county’s roads treacherous.

Temperatures plummeted to -6.5C(20F) overnight and the fog descended in the early hours, bringing visibility on the icy roads down to 50 yards in places.

Football was an early casualty of the weather, with games called off due to frozen pitches.

Techno Group Welshpool Town’s home game against Prestatyn in the League of Wales Premier Division was called off, as was Hereford’s League One clash with Leeds.

And the bitter start to the new year is set to continue, with more freezing fog forecast for tonight and temperatures not climbing much until the end of next week.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said: “Temperatures of between -6C and -8C are par for the course for the time of year.”

It is expected to start mainly clear and frosty tomorrow but will turn increasingly cloudy from the north-west.

The national outlook for Monday is it will turn bitterly cold across many areas after dusk with a very sharp frost setting in.
