Court case deemed ‘significant’

Saturday 3rd January 2009, 10:55AM GMT.

The sentencing of a second Shropshire gamekeeper for wildlife offences is the conclusion of “one of the most significant cases of its kind”, the Crown Prosecution Service said today.

Roger Venton, who worked on the Kempton Estate, near Craven Arms, was yesterday given a three month suspended prison sentence for charges relating to trapping wild birds.

Ken Postchild, of the CPS said: “These animals are protected by the law, whether on public or private land, and people should note that, if we have sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest, we will prosecute those that break that law.”
