Villagers’ fund bid for quake church

A Shropshire village is launching a huge community fundraising campaign in an attempt to secure the future of its historic church.

The Cressage Church Tower Repair Project will begin in the new year after officials were told the pinnacles of the tower, which dates back to 1841, had suffered earthquake damage.

The campaign aims to raise up to £24,000 to add to grants and insurance, which will pay for the tower to be repaired.

Jim Somervell, of Cressage Parochial Church Council, said grants needed to be matched by fundraising in the village.

“Recent earthquakes have loosened the pinnacles of our church tower and a major repair is now needed,” he said.”Although we have received some money from the church insurance for this, a further £24,000, is required.

“The Cressage Parochial Church Council is applying to charitable trusts for help but trusts are unlikely to give us grants unless we raise a substantial amount locally. Therefore we are starting a fundraising campaign for the Church Tower Repair Project in the new year. We appeal to Cressage residents to respond generously.”

Mr Somervell said that even those who do not attend church services will recognise that the tower of the church is a very visible landmark in Cressage.

“If it is allowed to fall into a state of disrepair the village becomes less attractive and the church may cease to be available for weddings, funerals, christenings, Remembrance Day services and more,” he added.

“Our church has been in the village since 1860. It is hoped that, with your generous support, it can continue for our children and grandchildren.”

Joost Tuyn, church warden for Cressage, said the consecration of the church was on October 19, 1841, when the first service was held.

He said: “At the moment we are making villagers aware of what is happening and the real campaign will begin in February.”
