Town hoping Luke will stay
Wednesday 31st December 2008, 12:22PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town have secured the services of goalkeeper Luke Daniels until the end of January – with hopes high that the deal could be extended through to the end of the season.
Manager Paul Simpson has reached an agreement with the 20-year-old’s parent club West Brom for Daniels’ temporary move to the Prostar Stadium to continue for at least another four weeks.
And there is a strong possibility that will then be extended until May.
Daniels joined Town on loan at the start of the season and has established himself as first-choice keeper.
And, while Simpson has revealed West Brom officials will not consider allowing the youngster to move on permanently, he is delighted to have Daniels for more – and possibly all – of Town’s promotion push.
“Luke’s loan is going to be extended through January,” said Simpson.”Once we get through January and the Premier League window closes, we will get an idea of whether they will let us extend it.
“At this moment, they are confident that we will be able to do that but we will have to wait and see.”
Daniels returned to the Town team for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy penalty defeat at the hands of Brighton earlier this month after a two month absence with a thigh injury.
And Simpson is now happy his goalkeeper has re-discovered the impressive form he was displaying before that problem struck.
“It took him a little bit of time to get back into it but myself and Dan Ashworth (sporting and technical director at West Brom) both had a chat to him,” added the Town boss.
“Dan came to watch him against Brighton and we had a chat as to where we thought he could get back to where he was.
“He has definitely taken it on board and he looks a different person again now.
“He is confident, he is positive, his kicking has been better so hopefully he will get even better with more and more games.”
Another member of Shrewsbury’s goalkeeping department, Scott Bevan, completed his permanent move to Torquay – where he has been on loan – yesterday.
