Smith in winter warning to Bucks
Wednesday 31st December 2008, 9:28AM GMT.
AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith has sent a stinging warning to his promotion-chasing troops ahead of tomorrow’s New Year’s Day showdown with local rivals Stafford Rangers.
He said: “If they think that the first half of the season has been tough, then wait for the second.”
The Bucks head into the first game of the new year in third position in the Blue Square North and on the back of a remarkable run of eight straight league wins.
With second placed Southport’s home game against Burscough in severe doubt due to frost and leaders Tamworth facing a tough clash against Hinckley Utd, Telford could conceivably enter 2009 in pole position with a win, but Smith is remaining cool.
“We’re in a decent position and it’s a chance for us to go at least second, but the most important thing is for us to concentrate on ourselves and get the points on the board,” he said.
“As Mick McCarthy (Wolves manager) said just the other day, things are only going to get tougher as we go into the middle of winter.
“It is a massive test for us, but 2008 has been brilliant and there is no reason why we can’t carry it on.”
Telford will expect to extend their fine run against Stafford after a 3-1 win at Marston Road on Boxing Day, but Smith has called for an improved performance.
He continued: “We really what to show Stafford what we are all about this time. If we play as we can tomorrow then I am confident that we can win convincingly.
“Stafford have had their problems, but they are still a side of quality players – they certainly won’t go down with that side.”
Right-back Lee Vaughan is ruled out for another ten days and could be replaced by Danny Edwards.
Chairman Lee Carter does not believe that the match is in threat despite predicted overnight lows of minus four degrees.
Frost covers were today protecting the pitch and there is no inspection currently scheduled.
