Cancelled race will go ahead next year

Wednesday 24th December 2008, 6:59PM GMT.

A half-marathon near Oswestry, which was cancelled this year following the death of its organiser, is set to be held again in 2009.

Doug Morris, 75, organised the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon for 20 years. Mr Morris collapsed and died while out training in August 2007, just a month before the anniversary event.

His friends and members of the Oswestry Olympians athletics club rallied round to ensure the 2007 race went ahead, but this year it was decided to take a break.

However, Mr Morris’s wife Margaret has announ-ced the race, which became recognised as one of the top 10 half-marathons in the UK, will be held again on September 13, 2009.

She said: “My son-in-law, Andy Walling, will be the race director and I will be in charge of all the entries and other things.

“We have a very, very good committee at Lake Vyrnwy. Chairman of the Llanwddyn committee is David Thomas.

“Entry forms will be available fairly soon after Christmas.

“They will be on the Oswestry Olympians website at www.oswestryolympi ans.co.uk”

She added: “We feel that we are ready to give it another go.

“It’s so popular it would be a shame to lose it off the athletics calendar.

“It gets over-subscribed with entries within months of the forms going out. The limit is 1,600.”
