Parking charges set for increase
Tuesday 23rd December 2008, 6:59PM GMT.
Some car parking charges in Oswestry will be increased from April – although town councillors have agreed to formally abandon any Sunday charges.
The cost of parking for up to four hours at the town council’s Central and Smithfield Street car parks will rise from £1.20 to £1.50, and from £2 to £2.30 for up to six hours.
Parking for up to four hours in the Horsemarket car park will rise from £1 to £1.20 and from £1.80 to £2 for up to six hours.
But it has led to an appeal from Chamber of Trade chairman, Yossi Gliksman, to think again about the plans.
Members of the town’s council’s markets and car parks committee heard yesterday increasing tariffs was a “fine balance”.
Town clerk David Preston suggested it was important to keep the cost of parking up to one hour in Oswestry at 40p, which he said would be an attraction.
Councillor Martin Bennett said changing the tariffs would cost the council about £3,000 because of legal procedures so any changes had to be economically viable.
Councillor Heather Bickerton backed the increases but said: “We must look at what other towns are charging.
“A lot of Oswestry people are shopping in Wrexham and Shrewsbury. If we make parking too expensive they will stay away.”

Has the town council finally lost their marbles,I thought the number one priorty is to get people to come to oswestry, with shops closing in the town, the last thing Oswestry needs is a increase in parking fees. This will deffently keep people away from the town.I think is about time to get rid of these so called town councillours, and get some new blood in before Oswestry becomes a ghost town,
