FTSE 100 down on opening

The FTSE 100 was down over 0.5 per cent this morning as the City started the week into the Christmas with a distinct lack of jubilation.
At 8:18 GMT, the index stood at 4,259.70 – a fall of 27.23 points or 0.64 per cent.
Standing out among the those up this morning was Schroders Non-Voting – following recent volatility – up 15.89 per cent.
HBOS gained 4.83 per cent, Old Mutual rose 3.38 per cent and Schroders was up 3.19 per cent.
Heading the falls was London Stock Exchange – down 4.76 per cent – followed by a gander of miners; Vedanta Resources fell 4.24 per cent, Eurasian was down 3.48 per cent and Xstrata was down 3.33 per cent.
Lloyds TSB dropped 3.27 per cent.
On the currency markets, sterling was up 0.09 per cent against the dollar to $1.4961.
Against the euro, the £1 buys €1.0637 – a fall of 0.9 per cent – making €1 worth £0.9436.
