Bridge due to open for Christmas

Monday 22nd December 2008, 7:00PM GMT.

A temporary bridge put up over a Shropshire brook after the original structure collapsed is due to be opened in time for Christmas.

The old bridge at Sheinton, near Cressage, gave way after heavy flooding this year.

Traffic had to be diverted along the A458 and A4169 roads because there was no other way to cross.

Work started on a temporary bridge and approach roads on November 24, and although it has not yet been completed, it has now progressed enough that it will be opened for the Christmas period.

The bridge will reopen to traffic on Christmas Eve at lunch time and will remain open until January 5.

It will have to be closed again at 10am on January 5 for work to be completed, and that is expected to take about one week.

When finished, the temporary bridge will remain open to traffic until a permanent bridge has been built.

Work on the temporary bridge is being carried out by Enterprise and Janson Bridging under the supervision of the scheme’s designer, Mouchel.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said those involved in the scheme deserved to be praised.

He said: “I am delighted that we are able to open this bridge temporarily for Christmas. I would like to congratulate all teams involved for completing this stage of the works in time for the holiday period.”

The rebuilding project is expected to cost about £250,000.
