Gilks set to return home
Friday 19th December 2008, 12:59PM GMT.
Goalkeeper Matthew Gilks was today preparing for his final weekend at Shrewsbury Town after being told his loan will not be extended.
Gilks will be involved in the 16 for tomorrow’s eagerly anticipated third-versus-first Prostar Stadium meeting with Wycombe, but will then return to his parent club Blackpool.
The 26-year-old has played four games for Town – conceding just two goals – but Luke Daniels, another on-loan stopper, has now returned to action after injury.
“I’ve spoke to Gilksy and I’m not going to extend the loan,” said manager Paul Simpson.
“Luke Daniels is fit now and it’s a case of we can’t go with another goalkeeper. We have got enough as it is.
“I have been delighted with him over the month but he will go back to Blackpool and we thank him for what he has done.
“He has been very good. I knew all about him and I knew he was a good goalkeeper.
“He just needs to be getting games so I will keep an eye on his situation and we will see what develops.”
Simpson, meanwhile, is looking forward to taking on the League leaders, aware a Town victory will cut the gap between them to four points.
“As a player, manager and coach these are the games you want to be involved in,” he said.
“Wycombe deserve to be there (top). They have been more consistent than anybody else and it’s something we have to try and achieve.
“They don’t concede many goals so it’s a good challenge for us.
“They would be happy with a draw, we want a win out of it so we have to be positive which is what we have tried to do in every game so far this season.
“We need to try and cut that gap down because teams will be dropping points all the time between now and the end of the season and we want to try and get as close as we can to Wycombe.”
Full-back Darren Moss sustained a hip injury against Brighton on Tuesday, but is expected to be fit.
