Vaughan vows to stay with Telford
Thursday 18th December 2008, 2:00PM GMT.
Popular defender Lee Vaughan has dismissed talk of a January move away from AFC Telford United – and backed the club to win the Blue Square North title.
Vaughan, who has featured both as a wing-back and full-back this season, has turned in consistently impressive performances for the Bucks.
That has led to rumours of interest from Football League and Blue Square Premier teams, but the 22-year-old has shrugged off the speculation.
“There’s not been any concrete interest that I’m aware of, and I’ll just concentrate on my football here,” he declared.
“People can do all the talking they want because I’ve heard it all before. I’ll just concentrate on playing for Telford, that’s where I want to be.
“Me and the manager (Rob Smith) have our ups and downs, but I wouldn’t be anywhere else. It’s a great club to be at.”
Vaughan expects to have fully recovered from a bout of flu in time to face Stalybridge on Saturday, having had to settle for a place on the bench in the 2-1 win at Boston in the FA Trophy.
A win could see the Bucks go top of the table for the first time if results involving Tamworth and Southport were to go their way.
And the former Walsall youngster believes the side has all the ingredients necessary to stay there.
“I think Kettering last season were the best side in the league, but I think we are this year and there’s no reason why we can’t win it,” said Vaughan.
“The league is our bread and butter and that’s the one we want to win. These cups are nice but we’ll concentrate on the league.
“If we find ourselves top then I’d be comfortable leading from the front. We’re usually good in the latter part of the season anyway, so we should be fine.”
Meanwhile, assistant manager Larry Chambers has dismissed reports linking the club with a move for crisis-club Stafford’s centre-back Wayne Daniel.
