Symes heads back with Town goal
Saturday 13th December 2008, 11:25AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town striker Michael Symes has declared himself “up for the challenge” as he prepares for a return to the Prostar Stadium.
Symes has been out on loan at struggling League Two rivals Bournemouth for the past month but fully expects to return to Town after his last scheduled game with the Cherries at Rochdale today.
The 25-year-old has made just seven appearances for Jimmy Quinn’s Bournemouth – six of them as a second half substitute – and has failed to find the back of the net, but he still believes that the time away has put him in good stead to fight for a place alongside Grant Holt in attack.
“I needed to get some games under my belt to get fit and sharp,” said Symes, who has been living out of a suitcase in a hotel on the coast.
“It’s been a bit frustrating not to be playing as much as I would have liked (230 minutes in total) but I’ve got some games out of it and that’s the important thing.
“You can play all the reserve games in the world, but they lack that competitive edge.
“Hopefully I will come back sharper and fitter than ever. The manager hasn’t spoken to me about a loan extension and it’s too far for me to travel really, especially this time of year.”
Symes’ chances at Shrewsbury this season have been limited with Holt and Richard Walker in fine fettle up front – and things don’t look likely to get any easier for him following the arrival of loan ranger Jamie White from Southampton.
White’s initial month at the Prostar Stadium was due to end with this afternoon’s trip to Grimsby, although all the signs are that the temporary move will be extended – but Symes is relishing the fight for places.
“I’m up for it,” he proclaimed. “I will always try my best for the team. I have just got to perform as well as I can and do myself justice when I get the chance.
“It’s tough competition, but that’s good at any club. Any team challenging seriously at the top needs to have a decent squad.”
