Telford chief wants money owed

Thursday 11th December 2008, 12:45PM GMT.

Lee CarterChairman Lee Carter today named and shamed two non-League clubs owing AFC Telford United thousands of pounds – and urged the Football Association to take action.

The Bucks have still not been paid their share of the gate receipts they are due from their FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at Blue Square Premier club Northwich Victoria in October.

And Bromsgrove Rovers owe the 50 per cent share of defender Jimmy Turner’s wages that they agreed to pay during his month on loan at the BGB Southern League outfit.

“It’s not a great deal of money – we’d estimate it to be about £3,000 from Northwich and its in the hundreds for Bromsgrove – but it’s the principle of the matter for me,” said Carter. “In the case of Northwich there’s an FA rule saying clubs must pay within 14 days.

“Yes, they’ve got their problems, but I’ve still read about them signing this, that and the other player and their owner Jim Rushe has not responded to our correspondence or the FA’s.

“I’ve had three phone conversations with the Bromsgrove chairman Tom Herbert and he’s told me the cheque’s in the post.”

Carter believes the situation is just another example of the poor state of many clubs at non-League level, and has urged the FA to take a more hands-on approach.

“It’s not that we need the cash – we can do without it and we’ve been fortunate this year with our cup runs – but for some clubs it could be the difference between trading and going out of business,” he added.

“We’re hopping mad about it and I don’t think the FA have been strong enough on it so far, even though they have sent letters.

“They need to take a serious look at this level of football because there’s an absolute Armageddon facing us. There’s stories every week about bounced cheques and players not being paid – it’s frightening.”

Northwich general manager Dave Thomas said today: “We are aware of the situation and we’re dealing with it through the FA.”

A spokeswoman at Bromsgrove said that, due to illness at the club, no-one was available to comment.
