Jobs will go at plant hire firm
Monday 8th December 2008, 8:50AM GMT.
Plant hire company Hewden is set to cut more than 200 jobs as 22 of its depots – including one in Shrewsbury – will be closed or merged during a restructuring of its UK network.
The Shrewsbury branch at Sundorne Trade Park, Featherbed Lane, is one of 12 branches which are proposed to close.
Branch manager Kevin Stowe said the seven staff at the depot had not yet been told if they would definitely be losing their jobs. Hewden currently operates from 102 depots and employs 1,750 staff. The 213 job cuts will be completed by the end of March 2009.
Hewden executive director, Doug Sprout, said: “Everyone is aware of the rapid and unprecedented decline in the construction market which is hurting every plant hire company.
“Our first concern is for our staff who will all be affected by these changes but we are also determined to maintain the best possible customer service during this restructuring.”
Mr Stowe said he would be attending a meeting with bosses of the firm on December 16 when staff at Shrewsbury would learn of their fate.
