Group demands road safety works

A group of Newport residents have written to Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon calling for urgent safety works to be carried out on a stretch of road where two pensioners were killed.
The residents claim motorbikes frequently tear along the A41 between Chetwynd Church and Chetwynd Firs at speeds of more than 100mph, while lorries clock up to 70mph on the stretch.
They want the speed limit reduced from its current 60mph to 40mph and a host of other safety improvements carried out.
The call for action follows a crash on the A41 near Newport last month in which an elderly couple were killed.Ronald Twemlow, 86, and his 81-year-old wife Freda, of Tern Hill, died when their car collided with two lorries on November 13.
A group of seven residents have put their names to a letter to Mr Hoon, which expresses concerns about the safety of motorists and pedestrians using the stretch of the A41.
In their letter, they say: “The current speed limit of 60mph is totally inappropriate for this section. It is abused by almost all road users, notably the bikers who travel at speeds in excess of 100mph and the HGVs which often reach 60 to 70mph, especially on the southbound, downhill section.
“A more sensible speed limit would be 40mph. This would reflect just how dangerous the road is, not just for motorists but cyclists and pedestrians.”
