Cabbie seriously injured in attack

Saturday 6th December 2008, 2:30PM GMT.

PoliceA taxi driver suffered serious head and facial injuries in an attack in Telford today.

The 31-year-old man, who has not been named, was taken by ambulance to the Princess Royal Hospital. His condition was said this afternoon to be stable.

It was the latest in a series of assaults on taxi drivers in the Telford area in the last few weeks but police say they are keeping an open mind as to whether they are connected.

Constable Stuart Ind, Telford police spokesman, said: “A resident in Ryebank Road, Ketley Bank, called 999 at 1.15am today and police and ambulance were there within six minutes.

“A black cab driver had suffered a serious assault and was taken to hospital by ambulance with head and facial injuries.

“We are still waiting to speak to him but it appears he was assaulted by more than one man although we don’t know whether any weapons were used.

“We think he was assaulted somewhere in the road and then managed to make his way to a house to ask for help.”

The assault is being investigated by detectives. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about who might be responsible is asked to contact Telford CID on 0300 333 3000 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
