Brigade warns over kitchen fires
Saturday 6th December 2008, 6:00AM GMT.
Shropshire people are being warned that kitchen fires could devastate their lives this Christmas.
This is the key message of a hard-hitting safety campaign launched by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters are using leaflets, posters, static displays, public events and a billboard to convince the public to take precautions.
On the billboard unveiled at Wrekin Retail Park, Telford, a huge poster shows a cooker overloaded with burning pans with the stark warning: “A Shropshire family will be devastated this Christmas – don’t let it be you”.
The brigade is appealing to householders never to leave cooking unattended and to ensure their smoke alarms are working.
“Kitchen fires break out due to lack of attention and account for nearly 60 per cent of all house fires in Shropshire,” said John Das Gupta, community fire safety chief.
“Christmas is always a very busy and stressful time which inevitably results in an increase in the level of kitchen fires.”
Another threat to people’s lives at Christmas was from car crashes, said Mr Das Gupta. “Every year throughout the county, people will die in car crashes that are avoidable,” he said.
“For the mother, father, sisters and brothers left behind, life and Christmas will never be the same.”
The brigade is working with local authority road safety teams, and the Safer Roads Partnership.
