Movies and TV filmed in Shropshire
Friday 5th December 2008, 10:30AM GMT.

The ruggedly beautiful backdrop of the Stiperstones provided an ideal setting for the 1950 film Gone to Earth, about a rich landowner who falls in love with a gypsy. Almost the entirety of the film was shot in Shropshire, including Much Wenlock, the point-to-point racecourse at Eyton, Longner Hall in Shrewsbury, Pontesford Hill, Snailbeach and the Devil’s Chair (above), where the gypsy casts her spell.

‘The Green Green Grass’. Truly awful, packed with every stock comedy stereotype in the book and just really really unfunny. Meanwhile ‘Take Me Home’ as I remember it was superb and could still look good i’m sure if repeated today.

Anika Rice filmed at the pool at Lilleshall Abbey for Challenge Anika – not that I ever watched that trash. But I remember seeing Anika being driven around in a car while that beach buggy was on the back of a truck near Bridgnorth. It was a total con!

Some years ago some scenes in a television serial of Oliver Twist was shot in Shrewsbury with one scene looking up the steps of Marine Terrace towards a horse drawn handsome cab. Trouble is that through the windows of the cab you could see the sign above a shop in the background saying Salop Music Centre!
