Building work to begin on complex

Building work on Oswestry’s £9 million leisure centre is expected to start in the spring after the project was given final approval.
Oswald Park Lifestyle Centre, to be built off Shrewsbury Road, will replace the town’s ageing leisure centre.
Members of Shropshire Council’s implementation executive, which is overseeing the transition from district councils to one single county-wide unitary authority gave the final go-ahead to the project yesterday.
Oswestry Borough Council has already agreed a contract of £7.6 million for the work. The total cost of the new centre will be £9,573,000 after land purchase and other costs are taken into account.
Councillor Betty Gull, borough mayor, said she hoped work would start on the foundations before the council was swallowed up by the new unitary authority next year.
She said: “We have waited a long time for this and I am delighted we can get started.
“I am hopeful the first sod can be cut in the lifetime of the borough council. I think that would be very appropriate considering all the hard work the council has put into this.
“It will certainly be a boost for Oswestry.”
Dave Jones, council manager, said work was scheduled to begin in the spring and is expected to take 85 weeks.
The centre will include a swimming pool and learner pool, indoor sports hall, fitness suite, sauna and more.
