Mother and baby rescued from flat
Wednesday 3rd December 2008, 11:16AM GMT.
A mother and her eight-month old baby were rescued by firefighters and a locksmith after becoming trapped in a first-floor flat in Telford.
Stephanie Dart, 18, and her son Leon were stuck in their home in Church Street, St Georges, for nearly two hours yesterday.
They were shaken but unhurt by their ordeal. Miss Dart said she was on her way out to buy baby food when she realised she could not open the door.
She said it was a frightening experience that made her feel sick.
Miss Dart’s sister Samantha Amos called the fire services just after 1.30pm when she went to visit her sister but could not get in.
Crews from Wellington went to the scene to free the mother and baby.
Sub-officer Duncan McLoughlin said the door was the only way in or out of the property.
Crews stayed there until a locksmith arrived at 2.30pm to open the door.
Miss Dart said: “I was just on my way out to go and get some baby food and things for my son when I found the door was jammed.
“I had some food in already but I wanted to get more in case we got snowed in.
“My sister called the fire brigade for me.
“I was scared being locked in, it’s not very nice being stuck indoors.”
Miss Dart said her partner Kelvin Jones rang Telford & Wrekin Council to report a problem with the door and his mother Racheal Gibb also came out to help.
The flat is temporary social housing accommodation. The family have been there a year and hope soon to be moving to alternative premises.
A council spokeswoman said someone had been sent out to the property within 10 minutes of the call being received.
