Vote for market call to give town boost
Tuesday 2nd December 2008, 9:47AM GMT.
Residents are being urged to vote for Shrewsbury Market Hall as Britain’s favourite – in a bid to boost the local economy and bring in more tourists.
A competition is being run by the National Association of British Market Authorities to find the UK Market of the Year. There are various categories including for the first time on-line voting for Britain’s Favourite Market.
Local residents and visitors are being urged to take part in the competition which helps publicise how important markets are nationally.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council portfolio holder for markets, Councillor Tudor Bebb, said: “I would encourage local residents to take part in this exciting competition that helps publicise just how important markets are nationally and importantly to the local economy and tourism in Shrewsbury.”All publicity is good publicity and I would urge local residents and our visitors to send in a vote for Shrewsbury Market Hall as Britain’s Favourite Market.
“Local markets have long been identified as the source of quality, low cost and often locally sourced food.
“Add a range of other essential trades and the unique atmosphere and colour of markets and it is easy to see why there is resurgence in both interest and loyalty to markets. In addition, every market trader offers a unique one to one shopping experience.”
Chief executive of the National Association of British Market Authorities, Graham Wilson said that Market of the Year has gone from success to success.
He said: “Entries demonstrate the importance of local markets and the highest standards of service, products and good practice that can be found. This competition is about promoting and celebrating the importance of markets in this country.”
This year Market of the Year is being endorsed by TV celebrity and BBC Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers.
The results will be announced in an awards ceremony at Birmingham Council House on January 29. Voting online is free by visiting www.nabma.com
Voting opened yesterday and can be recorded until January 20.

The hall I could vote for but how am I supposed to ‘love’ that awful truly dreadful brick tower above it? Its an eyesore and an embarassment visible for miles and a symbol of the madness that flourished unchecked in the 60′s.

I forgot to add that the damn things only useful function – to tell us the time – is also frequently not working. I wish Fred Dibnah was still with us!

It should be a Local Council Law that all clocks in Council domains, ie: Streets etc, should show the correct time. Anyway I prefered the Original Market Hall, which could have been suitably modernised

the building is a disgrace to the ancient borough. inside there are some excellent book and antique stalls, also butchers, bakers and greengrocers. sadly this market does not compare with one of the counties best markets, wellington

I have in front of me a photograph of the “old” Victorian Market Hall, when I think that that beautiful landmark was demolished to make way for this modern monstrosity my blood boils. The vandals that demolished the old one should hang their heads in shame if they are still with us to see what they did.
I have very fond but disapointing memories of the old one, I worked part-time in Shoplatch, sufficient to get the money to pay my train fare back to London after my week-end leave and a young lady worked in a shop in the Market Hall, I chased after her persistently but apart from having a chat at every opportunity I could manage, she didn’t want to know. That was over 50 years ago and I still think she was georgeous. The mere mention of the Market hall conjures up images of a beautiful “old” building and a beautiful young lady who taught me my first lesson in courting – and how not to go about it.

its good to shop in markets, come on shrewsbury people reduce your carbon footprint and support local farmers! Agree the architecture is lacking though, 30 million on a new theatre, cant we find 3 million to reclad the building????

stuart how right you are about the old market hall. when i think what the planners and councillors have done to my lovely old town, a beautiful georgian shire hall in the square swept aside for a vile modern monstrosity, a lovely lloyds bank building facing you at the end of high st, the old post office the crown opposite, morris’s, the raven hotel, need i go on,all the new shopping malls could have been built behind the old frontages. thankfully if you close your eyes in the new market, you can just imagine what the exterior used to be like. progress? bah humbug. memories are a wonderful though., i remember as a child old midland red buses lining up in the square prior to moving to the new barker st bus station in 1952

Have to admit its not the most attractive Building! I do wonder how many people objected when the old one was knocked down? the 60s and 70s were a low point in architecture!
