Snow alert for motorists
Tuesday 2nd December 2008, 12:21PM GMT.
Snow is on its way – that’s the warning from weather experts today.
Temperatures are set to plunge below freezing in Shropshire in the next few days with the mercury reaching as low as -4C (25F)
The region awoke this morning to freezing temperatures with some parts already hit by a sleet showers.
John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said the county had mainly seen rain, wind and sleet so far – but the snow is on its way.
“Shropshire has managed to miss the snow so far but it should be here at around 3am tomorrow when temperatures drop to -4C(25F).”
“Up until then we should expect wet and windy showers with a bit of sleet,” he added.
Telford was frosty and cold this morning, but roads were made even wetter following a lashing of heavy rain at around 7am.
Sleet showers hit Market Drayton this morning as the icy weather moved across north Shropshire making roads and pavements slippery for people on their way to work.
Council chiefs in Oswestry described some of their roads as “treacherous” this morning and urged drivers and pedestrians to take extra care.
Oswestry Borough Council spokesman Paul Newns said: “Many roads are very icy and we would urge motorists to be cautious.
“We would also urge pedestrians to be careful because the pavements are also icy.
“We are not aware of any particular problems.
“But many of the roads around the area are treacherous.”
The arctic conditions are also expected to blast the rest of the country today with an inch of snow expected to hit the north of England with sleet and rain more likely in the south.
Mr Warner said: “It is not really wintry conditions like we knew them 30 years ago, because back then we would have probably been snowed in by now.
“We get snow and sleet more than anything else across the country because of global warming.”

I am just waiting for someone on a news programme to host a big debate about “Is all this cold weather down to global warming”!!!!

I’m waiting for the schools to say they are closing – just in case.

i blame Gordon Brown

It would take a serious snow storm to close the corbert school. Last year they waited till the very last minute, when the radio was warning drivers not to use the roads before they sent the kids home.

I think that they should predict snow 365 days of the year, it might keep some of the muppets off the roads.

A man on the radio from AA said not to use the roads until the weather got better, so i have emailed the office to say I won’t be in until May.

We all have one thing to be thankful for in this country and that’s the comfort of knowing that our weather forcasters aren’t doctors, otherwise they would be diagnosing some very strange diseases when we probably only had a cold really…. ;-)I must admit though it is one of the few jobs where you can be WRONG most of the time and still not get the sack.
Do we really need these people??

I remember when we had snow storms and the snow was upto my knees…or was that just cuz i was 5 at the time(late 80′s/early 90′s) and it just seemed so much worse, just like wagon wheels were twice the size as they are today!
Yeah right,we’ll wait and see as the only weather the forcasters ever get right is YESTERDAYS WEATHER !!!!!

This is all much too funny…….”an inch of snow expected to hit..” ..”arctic conditions…”
I live in a town with a snowfall that is usually around 8ft (last year we got 10ft)…. arctic conditions in this country is when it gets to -40c and the high for the day is -30c.
I remember years in Shropshire that were a bit cold — 1947 comes to mind. Does anybody on this forum remember that year?
