Walker desperate to ignite season

Monday 1st December 2008, 11:50AM GMT.

Richard WalkerFrustrated forward Richard Walker is eyeing a second half of the season goal spree as he chases a permanent move to Shrewsbury Town.Walker, on loan from Bristol Rovers for the whole campaign, will have to kick his heels for the next fortnight because of a suspension following his sending off at Lincoln nine days ago.

That was a decision which has left the 30-year-old furious – but he is now determined to use it as a catalyst to hit a rich vein of scoring form on his return.

“With not playing much last season and the (hamstring) injury which kept me out for a month, it’s been a bit of a stop-start season so far,” said Walker.

“But I was getting into the groove, really enjoying how things were going and I thought I was doing well in my performances.

“The sending-off is another massive setback for me. It has come at the worst time and it has put me back a few weeks.

“But it gives me more incentive to kick on when I get back from this ban and I’m sure I can make it a good season.

“I’ve got a lot of catching up to do and I’m confident in my own ability. I know I am a player who can get plenty of goals and I’m sure I can show that in the second half of the season.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it here and if something was to come up (for next season), I would be delighted to talk about it.

“I’m positive I’m good enough to get a contract here and that is what I will be looking to do.”

Walker will not have the chance to build on his tally of four goals until the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-final against Brighton on December 16.

He was dismissed in only the third minute of last week’s goalless draw at Lincoln for an alleged elbow on Imps defender Daniel Hone, with a lack of video evidence denting hopes of an appeal.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he added. “It’s one of the worst decisions I have seen.

“The ref must have thought he saw something but the lad hasn’t helped me going down holding his face. You expect better from a fellow pro.

“The ball went forward and he was blocking my run so I put my arm across him to move him out of the way and if there was any contact with his face, it was probably my little finger and he just made an absolute meal of it.

“It’s gutting because we have got some really good games I’m going to miss now.”
