Royal show opens gates

Freezing temperatures but brilliant sunshine greeted hundreds of visitors to this year’s Royal Welsh Winter Fair.
Exhibitors, officials and showgoers were negotiated the icy roads to get to the Royal Welsh Society’s permanent showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells today.
Interest and attendance figures at the 19th annual Royal Welsh Winter Fair are expected to top, or at least equal the previous best number, and standards are also expected to be high.
Almost 200 classes and special awards are up for grabs to producers from across the UK at the two-day fair.
Cattle, sheep, pigs and horses are all being shown this year, with sales of quality livestock anticipated to reach the highest levels of all time.
Last year’s supreme champion limousin Belgian blue bull, fetched a record £12,500 while in the sheep section, the supreme champion Beltext lambs made £950 each.
As well as the livestock classes, handicraft and cookery competitions and a food hall crammed with the very best of Welsh produce was awaiting visitors today.
The Winter Fair continues tomorrow with attractions including two fashion shows and demonstrations from food producers.
