Bus crash driver is named by police

The bus involved in the accident in LudlowThe man who died after the bus he was driving crashed into a historic hotel in Ludlow was today named by police as 71-year-old Alan Taylor.

Mr Taylor, of Cleobury Mortimer, collapsed at the wheel of the R&B Travel bus, causing the vehicle to mount the pavement and veer towards the 17th century Feathers Hotel, injuring four women.

West Midlands Ambulance crews were unable to save Mr Taylor after the incident at about 5.25pm on Friday.

The four women, believed to be in their 30s, were all taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Maria Hawkuluk, for West Mercia Police, said today: “Two of the women suffered minor knee injuries.

“Another had more serious leg injuries and the fourth suffered serious internal injuries but is stable and improving in hospital.

“None of the injuries were life-threatening.”

She added that a post mortem was due to be carried out on Mr Taylor this morning to establish the cause of death.

A spokesman for R&B Travel, based in Ludlow, said Mr Taylor was a “valued employee” but declined to comment further.

Staff at The Feathers Hotel said the building had not sustained much damage during the incident.

A pole up has been put up against a front balcony of the hotel while a survey on the damage is carried out.
