Matthew is quick off mark

A Telford Sunday League midfielder has scored one of the quickest goals ever recorded.Matthew Bailey, left, smashed an unbelievable strike straight from kick-off in Unicorn’s 3-1 defeat at Shifnal Harriers last weekend.
FA officials watching the match timed the wonder goal at just under three seconds – but Bailey, 30, missed out on a place in the record books by tenths of a second.
“I’ve just spotted the ‘keeper off the line and whacked it really,” said Bailey, capturing the true beauty of the game.
“There was a bit of a side wind so I had to aim for the right post.
“It’s a bit gutting not to get the all-time record, but I’ll try and sort that out on Sunday (against Cressage). “I’m not quite sure how it’s possible – it takes two-and-a-half seconds to receive the first pass!”
It was only Bailey’s second goal of the season having missed much of the opening months through injury.
The fastest goal ever scored was after two-and-half-seconds by Marc Burrows for Cowes Sports Reserves against Eastleigh Reserves in a Wessex League Combination match in April 2004.
“Two-and-a-half seconds may not seem long enough to complete a manoeuvre but we appreciate there was an exceptionally strong wind,” said FA historian Dave Barber.
The fastest goal in Premiership history was scored by Tottenham Hotspurs’ midfielder Ledley King against Bradford in 2000 after just 10 seconds.
