County family is stuck in Thailand

Saturday 29th November 2008, 11:17AM GMT.

A Shropshire family are among the thousands of people stranded in crisis-hit Thailand, it emerged today.

Tommy Caulfield, 25, his wife Saai and their 18-month-old daughter Lily-May, of Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, were due to fly back into the UK last night.

But the family has been told by the airline the earliest flight available could be nearly two weeks away.

An estimated 3,000 people, including several hundred Britons, have been trapped in the country after protesters took over Bangkok’s international airport as part of anti-government protests.

And Thailand’s airport authority today said the Suvarnabhumi International Sirport will remain closed at least until Monday evening because the protesters refuse to leave.

About 2,000 police were today deployed, where anti-government protesters have camped out since Tuesday, forcing the halt of all flights.

Airport director Serirat Prasutanont said the stand-off has forced the airport authority to extend the airport’s closure until at least 6pm Monday.

Tommy’s father John, who runs the family plumbing and heating firm, said the family were currently paying to stay in hotels and were unsure of what they are going to do next.

He said: “They are stuck in Bangkok, they have been told by Eva Air, their company, that the earliest they think they will be able to come back is December 9.”
