Takeaway bid sparks protest from school

Plans to use one of three new retail units in Oswestry as a fast food takeaway shop have sparked protests from a nearby school.

The scheme is to go before councillors on Tuesday.

Building firm Dennis Edwards, of West Felton, was given planning permission to build the shops off Cabin Lane, near Eastern Oswestry Community Centre.

The firm has now applied for planning permission to use one of the proposed units as a takeaway.

A report to members says Sandie Pare, headteacher of the nearby The Meadows Primary School, and the school’s board of governors have objected.

They have raised fears about a takeaway leading to smells, litter, youths gathering and increased trespass and damage at the school.

They also said it was unnecessary to have a takeaway shop on the site because there was already a fish and chip shop in nearby Unicorn Road and voiced fears about an increase in vermin from discarded rubbish and food.

However, the planning officers are recommending approval, saying behaviour of youths was not a valid reason for refusing planning approval.
