No Tiers – just loads of great memories

Marc Tierney insists recognition from Shrewsbury Town supporters trumped a Wembley appearance as the highlight of his stay in Shropshire, writes James Garrison.
The latest loan transfer deadline day took a shock twist around 90 minutes before yesterday 5pm deadline when Tierney’s loan move away from Oteley Road was confirmed.
Colchester will be – at this stage – a temporary new home for the popular left-back. But it would be a major surprise if the initial five-week loan does not become permanent when the transfer window swings back open in January.
All of which has had Tierney reflecting on a largely successful 22-month stay at Shrewsbury following his move from Oldham.
After establishing himself as first-choice left-back, the joy of playing at Wembley was somewhat offset by a play-off final defeat to Bristol Rovers and a late red-card for a second bookable offence.
But the personal disappointment didn’t linger long for Tierney who emerged as a shining beacon of consistency amid last season’s mediocrity, earning him widespread acclaim at the end-of-season awards.
“In the summer, I knew a few clubs had enquired but I had a chat with Paul Simpson and things were going well at Shrewsbury,” said Tierney.
“I heard there was possibly a little bit of interest on Tuesday but I didn’t want to take too much notice of it with a game on the night (against Dagenham) so it was only really on Wednesday when it looked like it was going to happen.
“As always in football, things happened very quickly.
“I have had some great times with Wembley and winning the player of the year awards. The awards I got were brilliant, but the one off the fans meant so much to me. It was really special and has probably been the highlight because I’ve had a great rapport with the supporters.”
Tierney, who made 89 starts for the club and became a supporter favourite for his full-blooded style and for offering his thanks for the backing Town fans offered at the conclusion of every game, revealed family circumstances also played a part in him agreeing to try his hand at a higher level.
Tough
“It was a really tough decision but I just think at this stage of my career it’s the right move,” he added.
“My girlfriend is pregnant and we have our first child due on St Patrick’s Day (March 17) so there were family reasons to think about as well as trying to play at the highest level I possibly can.”
