Wellington swoop to sign new faces
Thursday 27th November 2008, 12:20PM GMT.
Wellington Cricket Club have made a double raid on Shropshire rivals to strengthen their Birmingham League division one hand for next season.
Talented South African allrounder Wendall Wagner, now classed as an English resident and no longer an overseas player, has joined Orleton Park from Marston’s Shropshire Premier League champions Reman Services.
And off-spinning allrounder Asif Sultan has returned to the club he began his cricketing career after two seasons at Shifnal.
“Wendall is a player we would like to have signed some years ago but with him being an overseas player, we couldn’t do so,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.
“We are hoping he will be a replacement for Gavin Byram. They are big shoes to fill but he can bat and bowl and is a clever cricketer.”
“We’re very pleased to have Asif back and hopefully he can continue to develop into a promising allrounder.
“He has probably developed more as a batter than a bowler at Shifnal but hopefully the two can go hand-in-hand here.”
Wagner has also had spells with Bomere Heath and Wroxeter.
