Hairy Bikers get cooking in county

Thursday 27th November 2008, 11:00AM GMT.

Celebrity chefs the Hairy Bikers are in Shropshire this week to film an episode for a new BBC series celebrating British food.

Dave Myers and Si King have already visited Stiperstones to go pheasant shooting, Ludlow’s numerous food shops, and spent yesterday afternoon cooking in the middle of Shrewsbury.

“It’s been lovely being here, we’ve been here three days so far,” Dave said.

“We’ve been staying in Ludlow and it’s a bit of a foody’s mecca with three Michelin starred restaurants and the food festival.”

Si was also full of praise, saying: “We do the miles on our bikes and it’s really a beautiful county. You don’t realise how beautiful it is until you get here.”

John Bonny, associate producer of the programme, which has the working title of Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour of Britain, said the plans at the moment are for the show to be broadcast on BBC2 in May.

Each episode will feature a cook off with a local chef. The Hairy Bikers chose to challenge Will Holland, from Hibiscus in Ludlow.

Dave said: “He’s an amazing chef and we spent most of Tuesday cooking with him.”

The duo also took on the challenge of making traditional Shropshire dish fidget pie under the cover of Shrewsbury’s Old Market Hall in the Square. A crowd of shoppers tried the dish, which is made with ham, potatoes and apples.
