Disabilty college may get approval

Thursday 27th November 2008, 11:05AM GMT.

A new residential college for people with “profound and multiple learning disabilities” could be built in Shropshire after plans were submitted for a second time.

The proposals to change the use of two three-bedroomed semi-detached houses on land off The Crescent, Bomere Heath into the facility were previously refused on the grounds of inadequate off-street car parking.

But now the parking area has been extended to provide two extra spaces.

And a new application for the building, which would be leased to Condover College, has been recommended for approval by officers.

The facility would create jobs for 20 full-time staff and six part-time staff. There would be between two and three staff between 7.30am and 10.30pm and one member of staff sleeping in each night.

Condover College has a number of small residential homes, which each have education and community activities provided.

But the majority of residents would leave the houses at 9.45am to attend the Grafton Centre or take part in activities in the community and return at 4pm.

A report to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council states: “The people who are supported are supervised 24/7 and have profound and multiple learning disabilities but there is no danger or threat to local children or adults.”

But 11 objections have been received by the council.

The matter will be discussed by councillors on December 3 at 5.30pm at the Guildhall in Shrewsbury.
