Bidding for council HQ offices ‘strong’
Tuesday 25th November 2008, 3:30PM GMT.
Bidding for Telford & Wrekin Council’s up-for-sale civic HQ closed today with bosses revealing there has been huge interest in the town centre property.
The offices and the 860 employees based there will be relocated to another site if the sale goes ahead but no new location has yet been revealed.
Offices, residential, leisure, retail or community have all been put forward as potential uses for the Civic Offices site which lies in the Southwater area of Telford Town Centre.
Councillor Andrew Eade, council leader, confirmed that bids had closed today and added: “Agents acting for us in this sale have received a large number of inquiries and initial analysis shows that we have a number of strong bids.
“This shows, despite the current talk of recession, that Telford and Wrekin remains a very attractive prospect for the business community and is one that they can see a vibrant future for.”
Councillor Shaun Davies has called for the council to move to Dawley.
He said moving the prestigious base out to Dawley could give the town a much-needed cash injection of up to £1 million in trade.
“Dawley was the home of the old council headquarters and I think it is fitting that a new civic centre be built there,” he said.
“The council staff would bring a lot of trade into the town and I believe it could be as much as £1 million,” he added.
Councillor Eade said a plan for new offices and where they would be located would be produced as the sale proceeded and added: “At this stage we are keeping all our options open.”

Councillor Shaun Davies has called for the council to move to Dawley.
Has Cllr Davies got a site in mind? I can’t think of one big enough in Dawley
He said moving the prestigious base out to “Dawley was the home of the old council headquarters and I think it is fitting that a new civic centre be built there,” he said.
It was the site of the old Dawley Urban District Council offices – a much smaller operation than Telford & Wrekin

They could relocate the Highways Planning team to the pub round the corner…maybe a few pints each might make them come up with some sensible ideas for a change.
The traffic lights were out on the main town centre island today…result…hardly any traffic, no queues and no accidents…if only they could stay broken

Why Dawley, just because the old offices were here doesnt mean they have to come back, you could put them in Donnington, but then Donnington would benefit from trade, or maybe Brookside. Yes, I live in Dawley, but who cares, Im moving to Coventry, why dont you do that, put T+W council in Coventry, you seem to move everything else around!

Bidding will be strong, they well know that they are going to get a bargain in the current climate.

Like it will go anywhere other than the town centre.
What land in town is owned by T&W? If its currently empty or only has a surface car park on it the chances are that’s where the new HQ will be.

It may be up for sale but who is going to pay for the new Council Offices. I will tell you who the council tax payers of this authority and it will not come cheap.
We will be hung out to dry with Council Tax rises to come. Why can’t they just move into one of the many empty Office Sites in Telford.

Wherever they place it, will they research the need for special ‘dedicated’ transport for it to keep about 700 cars off the road?
