Village roads ‘like the Wild West’
Monday 24th November 2008, 11:17AM GMT.
Councillors today branded Highley’s roads as the worst in Shropshire and likened to them to those of a “wild west town”. The county council has today been urged to take action over the condition of the roads.
Councillor Heather Kidd has challenged Shropshire County Council to find a town or village in the UK with worse roads than Highley, near Bridgnorth.
She claims residents are fed up with the potholes, crumbling pavements, road closures and the shoddy work that does not last.
And today Dennis Bache, district councillor for Highley, backed her latest campaign hitting out at the condition of the roads and calling for the county council to take action.
Councillor Bache said he had been campaigning for years to try and get the roads improved. “The state of the roads in and around Highley is absolutely appalling,” he said.
“If you drive through the centre it’s like a wild west town. It’s not exactly potholed, but the road markings have disappeared and it’s like driving on sheet iron.
“The problem goes back as far as 1992 when the county council was supposed to re-do the Highley to Bridgnorth road in five phases.
“Only two phases were completed and we haven’t heard anything about the scheme since,” he added.
Councillor Kidd and a group of other councillors recently distributed a survey to residents on the state of the roads which identified more than 20 areas that were in need of attention.
