Williams keeps up Bucks links

Dean WilliamsThere’s a familiar face in the AFC Telford United dugout – with former goalkeeper Dean Williams having returned to the New Bucks Head.

Williams answered the club’s call for a new goalkeeping coach and now will be responsible for working with regular No 1 Ryan Young – both in twice-weekly training sessions and before all matches.

The 36-year-old will be a familiar face to fans of the old Telford United, having made 90 appearances for the club between 1998 and 2001.

He arrived from Gateshead and also played for Doncaster Rovers and Tamworth, also going on to turn out for TNS in the Welsh Premiership – where he gained European experience.

Williams replaces Nick Cipolla as Telford’s goalkeeping coach and was with the squad for their FA Trophy third qualifying round tie at Gainsborough Trinity this afternoon.

Cipolla was forced to step down from the role because work commitments were making it difficult for him to attend matches on a Saturday.

“Dean applied for the job and he’s a good appointment for us because he gets on well with Ryan,” said Bucks boss Rob Smith.

“That was the main criteria for us because Ryan is our No 1 and he needs someone he can trust. So far it has been good.

“Nick couldn’t commit to the club every week so we were in a position where we had to get someone else in – but we’re grateful to him for his work as well.”
