Breaking newsA major police investigation was launched today following a serious sexual attack near the Dana prison in Shrewsbury.

The Dana railway bridge was sealed off with police tape and nearby Castle Walk was closed to traffic on the outskirts of the town centre.

Steps leading from outside the Dana down to the River Severn were also sealed off this morning and a white police tent put up.

West Mercia Police today confirmed that a serious sexual attack had taken place.

A Castle Walk resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said there was a visible police presence in the area and he had also seen a mobile CCTV police van.

He said: “There were police everywhere and a police line with officers manning the line stopping you walking over the Dana.”

A Castlefields resident saw the scene as he was walking along the river towards Shrewsbury.

He said: “I noticed the steps sealed off and about a dozen steps up I could see a white tent that seemed to be covering something.

“There was a policewoman guarding it.”

It comes just days after a woman was punched in the face and had her handbag stolen by two men wearing balaclavas as she walked near the Dana Bridge.

Two men are believed to have carried out the attack on Thursday morning as the woman reached the top of the steps from the railway station forecourt.
