Urgent action plea after deaths on A41
Friday 21st November 2008, 11:18AM GMT.
Residents today called for urgent action on a “dangerous” stretch of road where an elderly Shropshire couple were killed.
Ronald and Freda Twemlow, from Tern Hill, died after a crash on the A41 at Chetwynd, near Newport, last week, while another motorist needed hospital treatment following a collision on the same stretch of road on Wednesday. Villagers and councillors are calling for new safety measures.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, Telford & Wrekin Council member for Edgmond, said he had been inundated with complaints from parish councillors and villagers about dangerous overtaking on the road.
He said he now hopes to hold a site meeting with villagers and council highways chiefs on December 4 – and is calling for a review into double white lines to deter overtaking.
He said he has been asking for an investigation into the road for months.
“I’ve been looking at it before the accident and we feel strongly we need to take some action.
“I attended a meeting of Chetwynd Parish Council where the issue was raised, and they wrote to me asking me to take some action.
“There is a lot of heavy traffic going down there that is limited to 40mph, and because people can’t get past and the road is fairly bendy, a lot of people do overtake quite dangerously.
“We think taking some action to try to reduce the amount of people overtaking there is a step in the right direction.”
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said officers were aware of the issues surrounding the road and were looking into ways to make it safer.
