Village eyes post office victory

Wednesday 19th November 2008, 12:40PM GMT.

Campaigners fighting to save a Mid Wales village post office look set for success – a reprieve for Abermule Post Office may be approved this week.

Abermule is one of 23 post office across Powys earmarked for closure under Post Office’s UK-wide review of its services  this year.

But Glyn Davies, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Montgomeryshire, said an agreement had now been made to establish a “partnership”service in Abermule.

Post Office officials had decided to close the village post office and replace it with a mobile van, but campaigners feared shutting it would tear the heart out of the community.

Mr Davies said: “I remain disappointed Post Office ignored our requests to retain an independent branch in Abermule.

“However, I am pleased a thriving village such as Abermule is to be served by a partnership post office rather than a mobile van.

“In the circumstances this seems to be the best option available.

“I hope everyone will now continue to use the services in Abermule which have been so well delivered for so long.”

But campaigner Pauline Albrecht said no firm decision had been made as to the future of the post office.

“We’re hoping to get a decision at the end of the week and we are keeping our fingers crossed that a partnership service can be provided.”

A Post Office spokesman said it is to soon to confirm the agreement, but added: “Throughout the network change process, Post Office has worked hard to give consideration to the needs of our customers and their communities.”
