Villagers fight takeaway plans

Plans to convert toilets into a takeaway outlet in Llanymynech are being fought by villagers.
Phil Morris, owner of the disused toilet block beside the narrow B4398 in the village, has applied to Oswestry Borough Council for permission to convert the building.
But some villagers fear it would create noise, pests and traffic problems – and 30 villagers met in The Bradford Arms Hotel and Restaurant in Llanymynech to discuss their concerns.
Mr Morris says a new takeaway would bring a economic boost to the village and provide at least three new jobs. But Bob Hedley, Bradford Arms co-owner, said villagers were worried about road safety on what was a narrow street.
“The road is very narrow and if people visiting the proposed takeaway were to park on the roadside it would make it dangerous for children to cross,” he said.
“The late opening of a takeaway would also bring with it noise from the late-night revellers, which would intrude upon the privacy of our paying hotel residents and residents.”
Mr Hedley said he was also worried about food and hygiene issues and fears discarded food packaging could attract vermin.
A similar application to convert the toilets last year was refused after an objection from the highways authority. A decision on the latest scheme is expected by the end of January.
