Boss Rob Smith has backed AFC Telford United to rise to the occasion in tonight’s FA Cup first round replay at Southend, declaring: “I believe in my boys.”

The Bucks have sold around 250 tickets in advance and expect to take an away support of up to 300 to Roots Hall for the big clash. 

Telford drew the first tie 2-2, Jon Adams scoring twice to put them in front before Jean-Francois Christophe’s late equaliser saved the League One side’s blushes. 

Smith was proud of the performance that day, and has warned Southend to expect more of the same this evening.

“I think they will play better tonight than they did first time around – but I think they will have to if they want to beat us,” said the Telford chief,

The Bucks are hoping to set up a second round tie at home to Luton or Altrincham on November 29. 

“I really believe in the boys at the moment. What a day this is for them, and they’re really looking forward to it. 

“The main thing is that we give a good performance again. We don’t want the day to pass us by and be a damp squib. 

“We want to go there and win the game. It will be a big crowd and an even bigger occasion – I think we will rise to it, just like we did at Northwich (who they beat 3-0 in the fourth qualifying round).” 

Striker Andy Brown was substituted with a back injury in the Blue Square North victory over Gateshead on Saturday, though Smith today said he would be fit to start tonight. 

Midfielder Jamie Vermiglio is out with a groin strain, and Carl Rodgers looks set to replace him in the starting line-up. 

One man definitely not involved is Cup-tied striker Danny Carey-Bertram. 

Southend chief Steve Tilson has selection problems of his own, particularly in attack. 

Star striker Francis Laurent is suspended after being sent off in the 2-2 draw at Tranmere on Saturday, while partner Alex Revell is a doubt with a calf strain. 

The Shrimpers had hoped leading scorer Lee Barnard would be fit to return, but he is still struggling with a hamstring injury. 

“This will be their cup final,” said Tilson. 

“We know what to expect and we have to make sure we approach the game in the right way.” 

Should the scores still be level after 90 minutes tonight then there will be 30 minutes of extra-time followed, if necessary, by a penalty shoot-out.
