Appeal sign stolen from crash site

Tuesday 18th November 2008, 12:00PM GMT.

The aftermath of the crash which killed Mr and Mrs Twemlow, of Tern HillThieves have stolen a police sign appealing for witnesses to a road crash which killed an elderly Shropshire couple near Newport last week.

The sign, giving details of the A41 crash was discovered missing on Sunday – three days after Ronald and Freda Twemlow, of Garden City, Tern Hill, died.

The couple were travelling along the A41 in their Toyota Corolla at about 3.50pm when they were in collision with a lorry.

A second lorry got caught up in the aftermath of the smash.

Sergeant Reuben Palin, who is leading the investigation into the fatal crash at Chetwynd on Thursday, today urged anyone who may have seen any of the vehicles involved in the accident to come forward.

Sergeant Palin said: “Somebody has stolen the signs appealing for witnesses to the crash at Newport.

“There was three signs, but they have only taken the one with all of the details on, including the time and date of the crash which is vital.

“It is so important these signs are seen at the side of the road as regular road users may not realise they have information which could help us with our investigations into the accident.

“It is one of the ways we gain witnesses to the events leading up to the accident.

“Anybody who may have seen the Toyota Corolla or either of the two lorries before the crash should contact us as soon as possible.”

A Polish-registered Scania lorry, driven by a driver from the Czech Republic, and an Irish lorry are understood to have been involved in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sergeant Palin on 03003 333000.
