Tragic death of van driver

Monday 17th November 2008, 12:12PM GMT.

George WilliamsA man died and another was seriously injured when a van hit a bridge near the Shropshire border.

Tributes were today paid to 29-year-old George Williams, from Welshpool, who died after his Ford Transit van left the B4393 at Criggion Bridge, between Crewgreen and Llandrinio.

The van passenger remains in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he was rushed with serious injuries following the crash on Saturday at about 7.30pm.

Emergency services from Powys and Shropshire attended the scene.

John Hawker, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: “One man had suffered multiple serious injuries and, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

Glenis and John Williams, Mr Williams’s parents, and Emma Watkins, his fiancee, said Mr Williams’s death was “a tragedy”.

Mr Williams, a carpenter for Welshpool-based firm SWG Business, had just moved to a new home in Welshpool with Miss Watkins.

Mrs Williams, 52, said: “He always had a smile on his face. He was lovable and would liven any party up. It’s just a tragedy, a young life wasted.”

Miss Watkins, 26, said: “I loved him more than anything. He was my world.”
