Two killed in horror crash
Friday 14th November 2008, 3:05PM GMT.
An elderly north Shropshire couple have died after their car was involved in an horrific smash involving two lorries on a busy county road.
The victims were today named by neighbours as grandparents Ronald and Freda Twemlow, of Tern Hill. The couple were travelling on the A41 north of Newport when the accident happened at about 3.50pm yesterday.
The crash at Chetwynd left the road closed for at least seven hours. A Polish-registered Scania lorry and an Irish lorry are understood to have been involved. The victims’ Toyota Corolla is believed to have been in collision with one of the lorries before the other HGV became involved.
The couple, both in their 80s, were well known around Market Drayton where Mr Twemlow had been a joiner, while his wife ran wool stalls on the town market and in Newport.
One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s a big shock because they were a lovely couple and were never any trouble as neighbours.” Another neighbour said: “Mrs Twemlow still had a stall at Newport market, but she stopped the one in Drayton about two years ago. It’s such a shame, they were lovely people.”
Chris Ammonds, for Telford police, has appealed for witnesses to the smash to come forward by calling 03003 333000.
Firefighters from Newport and Wellington, as well as the incident commander from Shrewsbury, were sent to the scene after initial reports two people were trapped.

Very sad. I drive that road a couple of times a month and drove it on Wednesday night, when I got to my parents house in Hinstock, I did say to them that the drivers on that road have got worse, lorry drivers overtaking on that road is just unbelievable, its a deceptive road. No wonder so many fatals happen on there.

Tragic! And typical of this road where, though classified ‘A’, vehicles reach Motorway speeds.
There’s a catalogue of crashes on this stretch of highway which is littered with minor access roads and junctions.
Surely it’s time the local authority instituted suitable traffic calming measures to stop this continued waste of lives.

it realy is tragic for this couple and their family.
but it’s not always down to the lorry drivers (no one knows what happened yet) but there are bad car drivers as well.
my sympathies go to the family.

I was very sad to hear this news this morning from my sister-in law Gail Hardy . Rita Perrins was her mother-in law and so the sad news of this accident was sent via the internet. My mother used to buy her wools from Mre Twemelow in the Friday market in Newport. She was a very kind and caring lady who used to put skeins aside if my mother could not afford to buy them all at once. Just last July I was in Newport and popped into the market I usually said hello to her on my return visits, However she was busy with several customers. It was heartening to still see her there. She will be missed big time! My heart goes out to her family. Valerie Luscott in Essex ,Ontario Canada.

Indeed very very sad.
Also how disappointing that, whilst the circumstances are completely unknown, someone sees fit to post comments pointing the finger of blame at one party who could be completely innocent in this.

Russian roulette every time I go to Chester. Considering volume of freight, can’t believe A41 still not a dual carriageway from Tong all the way! Crazy road!

I have to agree with David about Dee’s comment. I used to travel that road daily, often early in the morning when it was mainly lorries on it and never saw any bad driving by lorries. It’s not very often lorries have to overtake and if they do it is usually because someone is holding them up un neccessarily.
And , no I’m not a lorry driver and never have been.

It’s totally wrong to point the finger of blame on any party until the full facts are known in this sad incident.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the whole family at this very sad time ~ thinking of you xx

I live nearby the place where this accident occured – and usually cycle along the path regularly. I watch the other drivers and cannot believe that they overtake when they have a blind bend. This includes both lorry and car drivers they underestimate the closeness of the corners. I am amazed that the people responsible for road safety have not put double white lines down the middle to let people know they should not overtake. I do not think this is too costly an exercise, if it helps drivers to make the right decision then it should be done.
