Students march over co-location
Thursday 13th November 2008, 2:00PM GMT.
Dozens of students took to the streets of Shrewsbury today to call for the co-location of the town’s two main colleges.
A march from Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology in London Road made its way to Shropshire County Council’s headquarters at Shirehall.
It came after Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Councillors turned down plans to co-locate the college with Shrewsbury Sixth Form College at the site in London Road.
Councillor Ann Hartley accepted a petition from the students when they arrived at the Shirehall.
She said: “As portfolio holder for children and young people’s services at Shropshire County Council, I support the notion of the co-location and the investment of £70 million into further and higher education in Shrewsbury and Shropshire.
“We are not looking at an amalgamation of the Sixth Form College and SCAT, but purely co-location on the same site. That offers a unique opportunity for academic and vocational courses on one site, which is an ethos we should be supporting.
“I accepted the petition from students this morning and have passed it on to the leader of Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council.”
An appeal over the decision is expected.
